Bat colonies in Boulder County homes
Bats are one of the most common — and most regulated — wildlife problems in Boulder County. Older homes in Mapleton Hill, Newlands, and historic farmhouses near Niwot are particularly prone to bat colonies, which use gaps as small as 3/8 of an inch to enter attics and wall voids. Boulder's foothills bring big brown bats and little brown bats into residential areas in large numbers, and a single colony in an attic can grow to several hundred animals over years. Critical: Colorado law restricts bat exclusion from April 15 through August 15 to protect maternity colonies. We follow this rule strictly, even when customers want immediate work.
Our bat removal & exclusion process
Every bat removal & exclusion job in Boulder County follows the same steps. The order doesn't change — what changes is the timing, depending on the species, season, and how active the situation is.
Full inspection and entry-point mapping
We perform an exterior and attic inspection to confirm bat presence, identify the species (which determines maternity-season windows), and locate every entry point — typically gaps in soffit-fascia joints, ridge caps, and chimney flashing.
Pre-exclusion sealing (secondary openings)
While the primary entry point remains open, we seal all secondary openings — gaps that aren't actively used but would become entry points once the colony is excluded from the main opening.
One-way exclusion device installation
On the primary entry point(s), we install netted or tube-style exclusion devices that allow bats to leave but not re-enter. Bats use them to evacuate over 5–10 days.
Confirmed vacancy and final seal
We monitor exclusion devices and use external night observation to confirm full vacancy. Once empty, the primary entry point is sealed with the same heavy-gauge sealing used throughout.
Guano cleanup (when needed)
Bat guano in attics can carry Histoplasma capsulatum and must be removed by trained technicians in respirators. Cleanup is scoped and quoted separately based on volume and accessibility.

Frequently asked questions
How much does bat removal cost in Boulder?
Bat exclusion in Boulder County typically runs $750–$2,800 depending on home size, entry-point count, and accessibility. Smaller homes with one or two entry points are at the low end; multi-story or historic homes with extensive soffit work and high roof pitches reach the higher end. Guano cleanup, when needed, is additional and ranges $400–$2,500.
What if there's a bat in my living space right now?
Call us immediately — this is an emergency situation. Bats in living spaces can indicate rabies exposure (especially if someone was sleeping in the room), and Colorado public-health protocol requires the bat to be safely captured and submitted for testing. We handle this 24/7, separately from exclusion work.
Why won't you exclude bats in June?
Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations prohibit full bat exclusion from April 15 through August 15 to protect maternity colonies. During those months, females are raising flightless pups that cannot leave. Excluding the adults out the primary entry point would trap the pups inside, where they would die — which is both illegal and would cause a worse problem (decomposition, odor, secondary pests).
Can I just spray something to make them leave?
No. There are no legal or effective chemical repellents for bats in Colorado. Mothball treatments and ultrasonic devices have been tested and don't work. One-way physical exclusion is the only method that's legal, humane, and effective.
